Become a College Prep Resident Advisor

The Northwestern University College Preparation Program is looking for resident advisors to help guide high school students through a summer of learning and fun at Northwestern. Earn salary, including room and board; work with bright, motivated high school students from around the country and abroad; plan exciting events and gain valuable experience while enjoying Northwestern campus life and Chicago this summer!

Qualifications:

  • completion of sophomore year of college by June, 2009
  • a consistent record of academic achievement
  • excellent communication, leadership, motivation, and problem-solving skills
  • previous experience as an RA, tutor, or camp counselor
  • enthusiasm and an interest in working with high school students
  • a wide range of extracurricular interests and activities
  • a strong sense of responsibility and a high level of maturity

Job Description: Resident Advisor, College Preparation Program
Length of Service: Thursday, June 18, 2009 -

Basic Functions and Responsibilities

The central responsibility of the position is to assist the Resident Director of the College Preparation Program by helping to manage and counsel high school students enrolled in the program. Resident Advisors (RAs) report to the Resident Director and live on campus with the students. RAs also help to coordinate extracurricular activities and supervise students at those and other activities.

Characteristic Duties

The RA assists the Resident Director by:

  • communicating students' issues and concerns in a timely manner
  • resolving problems in a responsible manner in consultation with the Resident Director
  • maintaining on-going good communication about the program (feedback, suggestions)

The RA participates in the Get Ready Series by:

  • attending weekly college readiness workshops with students
  • offering informal counseling to students regarding the college admissions process

Other duties and responsibilities:

  • advising and counseling high school students in the program
  • overseeing the smooth operations of the residence hall to which s/he is assigned
  • maintaining University rules regarding student conduct and behavior
  • performing other duties as assigned by the Resident Director and the Director of Summer Session

Training and Supervision

Resident Advisors attend a three-day training course administered by the University to become familiar with the University's policies for managing emergencies and other unforeseen events.

Resident Advisors report directly to the Resident Director of the College Preparation Program and receive further supervision from the Director of Summer Session.

Compensation

  • single room in a University residence hall and three meals per day for six to nine weeks
  • competitive salary of $2,100 to $3,150, depending on length of service
  • access to University athletic and sports facilities

  • a wide range of extra-curricular interests and activities
  • enthusiasm and a genuine interest in working with high school students
  • a strong sense of responsibility and high level of maturity

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working with high school students as an RA, camp counselor, tutor, or in some other capacity
