AAL 111-A
Elementary Chinese I
This first course in a three-course sequence completed by AAL 111-B, and 111-C introduces the material of the Elementary Chinese curriculum, presenting the Pinyin system, grammar, writing characters (both traditional and simplified Chinese characters) and compound words of standard modern Mandarin Chinese. This course aims to help true beginners develop their communicative competence in four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. During highly student-centered class meetings, the explanation of grammar and characters writing is in English, and the instructor mainly uses Chinese for oral drills, sentence buildup, and conversation. The Blackboard online multimedia facilities are used to enhance students' learning efforts. Business Chinese is available upon request to meet the needs of students who wish to use Chinese in business and professional environments.
