Special Topics in International Studies: Nationalism, Identity, Violence
 |
|
This course addresses different ways in which national identity affects the lives of people in different regions of the world. Drawing examples from Western Europe and North America and focusing on the Balkans and the Post-Soviet states, the course explores the constructive and the dangerous aspects of nationalism, including the methods of nation-building used to form Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union, the circumstances and consequences of each state's dissolution, and the accompanying processes of religious fundamentalisation, ethnic and linguistic cleansings, and the resulting violence. Case studies will include violence in Chechnya and the two comparable yet differently received political events of 2008: Kosovo's secession from Serbia and South Ossetiya's secession from Georgia.
