Academic Internship Programs in Chicago

In every quarter, including the Summer Session, Chicago Field Studies (CFS) offers full-time academic internship programs for top-ranked juniors and seniors. As part of the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, CFS is affiliated with the Departments of Anthropology and Sociology. In Summer 2008, CFS will offer three programs: Field Studies in the Modern Workplace, Legal Field Studies, and Business Field Studies. In these 9-week programs, which are worth four credits, students gain hands-on experience in professional work environments while participating in Northwestern seminars that connect academic theory with workplace learning. For more than twenty years, CFS has placed interns in over 350 organizations throughout the Chicago area.

While the academic focus of each program is different, in all programs, students intern at a local organization for 24-32 hours per week and enroll in two CFS seminars. Internship organizations are treated as sites for research, and the major assignments in each program draw on the original research that students conduct at the workplace.

These field-study programs are open to students in any school and major. Students who attend other colleges and universities during the academic year are also welcome to apply. Students must have completed their sophomore year by the beginning of the program. Admission is through application only, and students must attend an Information Session or discuss the program with a CFS staff person before applying. For more information - including a schedule of upcoming Information Sessions - please visit the www.wcas.northwestern.edu/cfs or contact the CFS office at 847-491-2706.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: February 18 through April 11, 2008

Most organizations hire their summer interns in February and March, so we encourage students to submit their applications by the February deadline. We will continue to accept applications until the April deadline as long as the programs don't fill up, but internship opportunities may be limited by that time.
