Business Analyst Certificate Program

International Institute of Business AnalysisThe field of business analysis is experiencing rapid growth, and many professionals are recognizing the value of becoming a Certified Business Analyst Professional™ (CBAP™). The content of the Business Analyst certificate program is aligned with the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA™) and can help prepare you for this certification. (PDF Format)

Business analysis is the latest trend in the Information Technology (IT) profession, which has undergone significant change over the past decades. In the 1990s, obtaining top technical talent was paramount in almost every industry. IT software developers - by creating and implementing enterprise-wide applications - served as major contributors to business innovation. When the tech "bubble" burst, the field experienced both downsizing and the outsourcing of the very technical activities that had contributed to its growth as a profession.

Since this leveling off, the strategic and business value of IT has continued to evolve, and IT professionals are being asked to draw from their analysis skills to deliver innovative systems and solve complex business problems. Business analysts and the role they play have been an integral part of this evolution. Many factors, including new approaches to software acquisition and systems development, a better understanding of business process management, and more sophisticated approaches to the requirements of management have contributed to this changing role.

According to Gartner’s 2005 report, six out of ten IT employees will assume business-facing roles by 2010. - The IT Professional Outlook: Where Will We Go From Here?

To meet the needs of this emerging field, Northwestern University is pleased to offer the Business Analyst Certificate Program, providing critical business analyst training in an integrated program focused on delivering business change and information technology projects that meet business objectives and organizational goals.

"The business analyst’s liaison role is a key to successful IT. The problem [with applications] is almost never with the technical specs, the coding, the IT 101. It’s the communication about how something will work in the business."
- Stephen Hassell, vice president and CIO of Emerson Electric CIO Magazine, January 1, 2006.
