This course will be held in Kresge Hall room 4435.
Introduction to the sound structure of language and the fields of phonetics and phonology. In the study of phonetics, we examine the two physical domains of speech: the articulatory domain (how speech sounds are produced in the human vocal tract) and the acoustic domain (the form and perception of sound waves). Students learn to transcribe speech sounds from languages around the world. In the study of phonology, students learn to recognize the ways in which speech sounds pattern in language to convey meaning and the ways in which these patterns are similar and different across the languages of the world. This course counts toward the Weinberg College natural sciences distribution requirement, Area I.
