Shakespeare in Performance is a performance oriented course in which students perform scenes and monologues from Shakespeare based on the First Folio technique. Writing in a time before the advent of directors and for a company of actors he knew well, Shakespeare included directions in his text through his use of punctuation, capitalization and various other poetic conceits that he knew his actors would be able to read like short-hand. Students will learn to identify the many clues about performance inherent in Shakespeare's First Folio, the first printed collection of Shakespeare's plays from 1623, and apply them through rehearsal and performance of scenes and monologues.
