Students who are not seeking a degree are considered students-at-large at SCS. Registering as a student-at-large provides the opportunity to take one or more courses for personal enrichment or to prepare for future educational or career paths. Students-at-large may take courses for credit or audit courses in which auditing is permitted. They are not eligible for financial aid.
Admission
There is no formal admission process for students-at-large at SCS, but they must have a high school diploma and be in good academic standing at the last institution they attended. If English is not their native language, a minimum Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 600 (paper version), 250 (electronic version), or 100 (Internet version) must be presented.
Registration
Students-at-large need only complete the Registration
Form (PDF Format) in order to register. Students
should check
course descriptions to ensure they have met all
prerequisites. Academic advisors are available to assist
students-at-large
with course selection and registration. Call 312-503-6950
to schedule an appointment.
Transferring to Degree-Seeking Status
Courses taken as a student-at-large may be applied toward
an SCS bachelor’s degree. Students-at-large who wish
to change their status to degree-seeking must submit
the online application before enrolling in their fifth SCS course.
Note: Students-at-large who wish to earn an undergraduate
degree must apply for admission before enrolling in their
fifth SCS course. Auditing Courses
Students may audit most courses (exceptions are designated
in the course descriptions). Auditors may not submit
written or oral assignments, take examinations, or participate
in labs. Auditors do not earn academic credit, but
audited
courses
appear on transcripts.
Academic Requirements for Students-at-Large
Students-at-large must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher and are placed on academic probation if their GPA falls below 2.0. Students with X or F grades (which are calculated as 0.0) may not register for the next term without the consent of the Student Affairs Committee. Failure to demonstrate satisfactory academic progress may result in probation or dismissal. Students who maintain at-large status need not fulfill the writing requirement.
